Many of you reading this probably thought that I mistyped. Nope! I believe that in some way, everyone leads. I think there is a different question that needs to be asked. How do you lead others?

It is human nature to look to others about how to do stuff. You may not realize it, but someone looks to you, right now! Do you know who looks up to you? Think about it, and you’ll think of some people. This can be an even bigger responsibility if you have a disability. People older and younger will look to you about how to deal with life issues. This can be a big responsibility, but don’t think of it like that. Think of the opportunities!

That’s what I have tried to do in my life. I am a power wheelchair user with dwarfism. I have used a power wheelchair since I was 5, so it is second nature. My mother and older sister have dwarfism, too. They provided me great leadership for most things. They don’t and have never used power wheelchairs. This made me look to others for leadership. This was difficult being the only wheelchair user at my school. I stumbled through my childhood without that leadership that would’ve helped very much.

That is why I am trying to get the youth with disabilities to be active in the local YCI (YOUTH CHALLENGE INTERNATIONAL) in my area. Thankfully, I work at it, so I can make it part of my work. I know its value, though. I also encourage any youth that I contact to join NYLN. NYLN stands for National Youth Leadership Network. It is a youth-led organization that helps youth develop leadership skills.
There are many ways that you can become a better leader.
